The best homemade tomato sauce recipes

How to make the most delicious homemade tomato sauce The taste is better than anything you buy in the store. This is easy to make from scratch and can last in the refrigerator for a month.
If I don’t think it’s worth it, I won’t tell you to make your own ketchup. This tomato sauce recipe makes the most delicious tomato sauce knock down anything you can buy in the store.
I love that this recipe uses real ingredients and we can control the sweetness of the tomato sauce. In the recipe below, I’ve given a range of sugar so you can adapt to your taste.
Key Ingredients
- Onion, garlic and ginger: Add too much flavor to this homemade tomato sauce. Ginger only adds a little spice, and the onions are cooked sweet and soft, helping to thicken the sauce.
- Five-spice powder: I like to add some spices to this sauce. It warms it and toast. If you are not sure, add less than recommended in the recipe below.
- Canned tomato sauce and tomatoes: Make our sauce rich. I use the whole tomato from the can, break down and blend into a smooth, shiny sauce.
- brown sugar: You can control how much sugar you add to your homemade tomato sauce. My family loves 1/4 cup (4 tablespoon).
- Apple cider vinegar: Just like a store-buyed brand, keeping our sauce well and rich.
How to make homemade tomato sauce
To make tomato sauce, cook the onion in olive oil until soft, sweet, light brown. Then stir the garlic, fresh ginger and spiced powder (to make the tomato sauce so that it adds a little or two red pepper flakes).

Make everything baked in a pan, which makes them even more delicious. After one minute, stir the tomato sauce and cook for another minute to remove any original tomato flavor. Then, throw away the rest of the ingredients (canned tomatoes, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar and salt).

Cook the tomato sauce until thick and shiny, and spoon slightly tomatoes while cooking. Then, mix until smooth. Once you are satisfied with the consistency, pour it into a jar and keep it in the refrigerator for up to a month.
Served with homemade tomato sauce
We love this simple tomato sauce, especially since it lasts for a month in the refrigerator! We will serve it next to the fries, sweet potato fries and rosemary baked potato wedges (pictured). My son also loves to dip our homemade grocery store, chicken nuggets and popcorn chicken into tomato sauce.
I also use homemade tomato sauce in some of my favorite recipes. It is added to the glaze of this classic meat patty and our favorite Türkiye meat patty. I also use it for my favorite barbecue sauce as ribs and easy to fry sauce.

Homemade tomato sauce is simple and tastes better than anything you buy in the store. I used 4 tablespoons of sugar but adjusted the sugar to your taste.

You will need
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 medium onion, cut into half a month
2 cloves of garlic, chopped, about 1 tablespoon
1 inch ginger, peeled and chopped
1/4 tsp to 1/2 tsp chopped red pepper flakes, optional spicy tomato sauce
1/4 teaspoon ground green
2 tablespoons tomato sauce
1 (28 ounces) can be used in juice whole tomatoes
2 to 5 tablespoons brown sugar, depending on the sweetness you like tomato sauce
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
Salt and fresh black pepper
direction
1Heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until about 8 minutes, until they are tender, sweet and light brown. Add garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes and spiced powder and cook, stirring frequently for 2 minutes.
2Add the tomato sauce and cook, stirring around the pan until red turns orange, about 2 minutes.
3Add tomatoes, juice, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, plenty of salt and some black pepper. Stir and taste if you need to add more sugar (we usually add 3 to 4 tablespoons).
4Cook on slow heat, lowering the heat slightly, then cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, until thickened and shiny, about 20 minutes. Taste and adjust with more sugar, salt or pepper.
5Mix until smooth, let cool to room temperature, and then refrigerate for up to one month.
Adam and Joanne’s Tips
- Using fresh tomatoes: Use 3 cups chopped fresh tomatoes.
- Notes on mixing: You can use an immersion mixer or a regular mixer. If you use a regular blender, it is best to stir in batches without filling the blender as usual, as the tomato sauce is too hot. We like to remove the center insert of the lid and cover it with a kitchen towel when mixing – this helps some steam release and prevents the lid from popping out (which can be a big, hot mess).
- The nutrition facts provided below are estimates. Let’s assume 1/4 cup brown sugar.
