Key Ingredients

  • Ground meat: This meatball recipe is great with most ground meat. Remember that fat-containing minced meat works best (looking for 7% to 10% fat). I like the recipe for beef meatballs, but you can use pork, turkey, chicken or lamb. I like a combination, too. My favorite is the ground pork and Turkey mixture, which I used in this Italian wedding soup.
  • Breadcrumbs: I add bread crumbs for texture. I also like salty cookies that use them instead of them as we did.
  • milk: Increase moisture and tenderize the meat, making our meatballs juicy and tender when cooked.
  • Egg: Add more moisture and help the mixture cook.
  • Parmesan: My best meatball ingredients! Parmigiano-Reggiano adds flavor and salt to our mixture. I’m very generous.
  • Oregano, salt and pepper: Helps season our meatballs. I keep the seasonings simple as they are more versatile meatballs.

How to make meatballs

I’ve made meatball recipes many times and my family loves them. First, stir the bread crumbs and milk in a mixing bowl. I let this mixture thicken for a few minutes and then whisk the eggs, parmesan and spices. Mixing all these ingredients before adding ground meat helps to ensure even distribution of seasonings.

Next, I mixed it in the ground meat. This recipe works great with most types of ground meat, so use whatever you like! I mix the mixture together until everything is combined and it’s time to form the meatballs.

Form meatballs

I like to use cookie Scoop to make sure they are similar in size and then roll them into the ball. If you want bigger meatballs, check out my Italian meatball recipe. At this point, you can cook the meatballs immediately or freeze them for later. I have tips below on how to freeze uncooked meatballs.

My favorite way to cook these meatballs is on the stovetop. It gives them a cute golden brown shell. I cook them on a heated pan with oil and over medium heat until they are browned on all sides and cooked in the middle.

You can also bake them in the oven, bring a boil in the sauce (like I did with these turkey meatballs), or use a slow cooker or fryer. I’ve shared tips on all these cooking methods in the recipe below.

What to serve with meatballs

Serve these delicious meatballs with your favorite sauce. I love this homemade red pasta sauce. These are also appetizers. I serve them with BBQ sauce and Buffalo Wing sauce with some blue cheese sauce on the sides.

You can turn them into meatballs, or stuff them into homemade pita bread with vegetables and some hummus. I also like to serve these meatballs with vegetables. Some of the favorites are stir-fried cabbage, roasted sweet potato fries and roasted broccoli.
