Key Ingredients
- cabbage: I used green cabbage in the photo, but you can steam other cabbage without changing our recipe. Consider Savoy, Napa, Red Cabbage or pointed cabbage (such as Hispi)
- butter: I use salty butter, but it’s OK to have no salt! Just adjust with more salt before serving to taste. For vegan, use plant-based butter.
- lime: Cabbage and lime are such an excellent combination, but you can always replace lemon!
- onion: Also known as spring onions, they cook quickly and help to season our lime butter.
By the way, if you have a steam basket, that would be great! It fits this recipe. If you don’t have a steam basket, don’t worry at all! You can still make delicious steamed cabbage by turning it into a pan soup. I’ve shared how (if there is a basket) how to do it in the recipe below! Hope you like it!

My family loves this simple steamed cabbage! It’s very easy and we love simple lime butter! If there is one, put a steamed basket in a larger pot to make steamed cabbage really easy. That said, you can make this recipe without a single recipe. You can easily steam the cabbage into a deep skillet. Simply rinse the cabbage under cold water (so it’s still wet), add a few tablespoons of water, pop on the lid and cook. Pay close attention to it and add more water if the skillet looks dry.
4 servings
You will need
Half of medium cabbage, about 1 lb
2 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons lime peel
1 green onion, sliced
Half lime juice
Salt and fresh black pepper
direction
1Prepare cabbage: Remove the core and cut the cabbage into quarters. Then, cut each quarter into thin strips about 1/2 inch wide. Add a colander and rinse with cool water.
2Steamed cabbage: If using one, add the cabbage to a steamed basket and place the cabbage on about 2 inches of water. Or, if you don’t have a steaming basket, add cabbage (still wet from the rinse) and 2 tablespoons more than tbsp water to a deep skillet.
3Cover the lid with the lid, place the pan or skillet on medium heat, cook until steamed until steamed, reduce the heat to medium low, and then steam for 5 to 7 minutes. Check it occasionally for softness/softness. If the pan or frying pan is dry, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water.
4Make lime butter: While the cabbage is steamed, melt the butter in a pan, add the white of the green onion, cook for 1 minute, turn off the heat, and stir the lime zest, pepper and salt. Set aside.
5Serve: Toss the steamed cabbage with lime butter, add lime juice, and season with salt and pepper.
Adam and Joanne’s Tips
- storage: Keep remaining cabbage in the airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. It is normal that it releases some extra moisture when it sits.
- How to use it: I love this thing, next to it is boiled salmon, grilled salmon with lemon dill, crab cake, pulled pork and simple grilled chicken!
